Story Spinner LogoStory Spinners™ are collections of carefully selected books that students can read with the help of audio files loaded on mp3 players. Our Native American collections provide alternative access to culturally significant literature for students in grades 3-12 who have print disabilities. The Story Spinner™ (RI) collection is an instructional program designed as a Response to Intervention (Tier 2 and 3) for Struggling Readers grades 3-6. This unique multi-sensory approach (printed text along with audio input) is an easy way to introduce, learn and reinforce core reading objectives and is the perfect complement to any phonics program. AT TRAINING

APEL offers a range of Assistive Technology training courses for educators as well as middle and high school students. Courses include:

  • SLICE Site Coordinator Course
  • SLICE Facilitator Course
  • Story Spinner Workshop
  • SLICE Tips Workshop (for students)

Our three assistive technology courses for special and general education teachers make clear how to identify students who have a "print disability" and develop an IEP that includes appropriate assistive technology, how to locate and access digital media for print disabled students, how to include students with reading difficulties in the general classroom and core curriculum according to current research and how to set up a "digital book club".

The SLICE Tips Workshop is totally hands on. Students learn how to access "talking textbooks" via the internet and easily complete academic assignments using their computer word processor.
